What The Funk?

Do you ever have one of those days when you just want to do nothing? I have been in a bit of a funk the last few days and although I do know why I am feeling so off, I have an internal dialogue with myself. “Lorna, you have so much to be grateful for so snap out of it.”

Easier said than done. Somedays you just must give yourself some grace and know that it is normal to feel down or overwhelmed but that it is also helpful to shift your mindset.

My middle son recently gave me a gift of a Five-Minute Journal. I love it because it gives me the opportunity to quickly reflect on my day and write down why I am grateful.

Studies have shown that expressing gratitude each day is good for the soul and has tremendous benefits.

Some of the top reasons to express gratitude are that it:

  • Boosts happiness: Gratitude helps to focus on the positive aspects of life and increases feelings of happiness and contentment.

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: Gratitude can help reduce stress levels by promoting positive thinking and reducing negative emotions such as anxiety.

  • Improves relationships: Expressing gratitude towards others can strengthen relationships and create a positive atmosphere.

  • Increases resilience: Grateful people are more likely to bounce back from difficult situations and have a greater ability to cope with adversity.

  • Promotes better sleep: Gratitude can improve the quality of sleep by reducing negative thoughts and promoting relaxation.

Although I know all this is true, today, I am still feeling UGH…

What do you do when you are in a funk? Do you find that expressing gratitude helps?

It is the start of my day, so I will share what I am grateful for today:

  • The grace my dear friend Marianne gives me when I am in a funk.

  • That I get to spend time with my middle son and his girlfriend this weekend.

  • That I just returned from an awesome weekend with my oldest son in NYC.

I must admit that as I just wrote these three things down, I smiled and thought, I could just keep writing things down because I have so much to be grateful for!

Today I will commit to myself to focus on expressing gratitude and will also give myself grace.

Action Step:  Write down the three things that you are grateful for today.
