Are You Truly Being Authentic?

By Marianne Clyde

One woman’s story on a search for authenticity as told to me.

I sat by the window, a blank journal in front of me, seeking a path to personal authenticity. The desire to be true to myself burned within me, but I wasn’t sure where to begin. Lost in my thoughts, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.

I spent quite a bit of time in self-reflection. I realized that I had neglected to explore my values, beliefs, and passions. So, I embarked on a journey of introspection, flipping through the pages of my journal to discover the essence of my being. I scribbled my dreams, fears, and the things that truly mattered to me, allowing my authentic self to emerge.

With newfound clarity, I understood that embracing vulnerability was as crucial as it was difficult. So often, I had hidden behind a mask, afraid to reveal my true self to the world. But no longer. I vowed to embrace vulnerability, to let others see the real me, strengths, weaknesses, and all. I often find that having the courage to be myself, implicitly gives permission to others to do the same.

As days turned into weeks, I dove deeper into self-awareness. I observed my thoughts, emotions, and behaviors without judgment. This practice helped me understand where I was in alignment with my authentic self and where I diverged. It was a constant process of checking in with myself, ensuring that I stayed connected to my inner truth.

Trusting my intuition became my compass. I listened attentively to my inner voice, acknowledging its wisdom. Sometimes it whispered softly, guiding me toward choices that felt true to who I was. Other times, it shouted with conviction, urging me to stay true to myself despite external pressures.

Living in alignment with my values became paramount. I discovered my core principles and set out to weave them into the fabric of my life. Each decision, each action, was an opportunity to honor my values and express my authenticity.

Mindfulness became my sanctuary. I practiced staying present, savoring each moment, and acknowledging the thoughts and emotions that passed through me. By observing without attachment or judgment, I found the freedom to act more authentically, guided by my truest self.

Seeking support, I surrounded myself with like-minded individuals who valued authenticity. Together, we formed a tribe—a community that understood the importance of being genuine. Their encouragement and acceptance inspired me to live more boldly, shedding the layers of pretense that I had carried for far too long.

I discovered the power of self-expression. Through art, I painted my emotions, allowing my innermost feelings to come alive on the canvas. With writing, I penned stories that mirrored my soul’s journey. I embraced music, letting melodies and lyrics reflect my authentic voice. These creative outlets became my vehicles for self-discovery and self-expression. I found that I loved to dance and felt freer after having done so.

Boundaries became essential as I grew. I learned to communicate my needs, values, and limits clearly. By setting healthy boundaries, I protected my authenticity, ensuring that I remained true to myself and my well-being.

Throughout this journey, I realized that personal authenticity was not about perfection but GROWTH. I embraced my imperfections, learning from my mistakes and celebrating my uniqueness. Authenticity was about ACCEPTING MYSELF as a whole, flaws and all.

As I looked back at the window, a sense of contentment washed over me. The road to personal authenticity had been challenging, but oh, how rewarding! I smiled, knowing that the journey was lifelong, but I was committed to honoring my true self, embracing each step with patience and gratitude.

Action Step: Begin today to embrace a personal journey of exploration and acceptance.
